PAST AND PAST CONTINUES TENSE



Simple Past Tense 
 Simple Past Tense is used to express the events that have occurred at a particular time in the past. events can be short or long. Means can also be several events happening one after one. In general, there are two important facts to remember in english tenses this:

- Irregular verbs (Irregular Verbs)
- Negative sentences and questions are not as positive sentence but retain the basic form of the verb

Simple Past Tense use :
1. Events in the past that have been completed (for example: I went to school)
2. The situation in the past (they lived a normal life until they won a lottery)
3. A series of actions in the past

Formula:

Positive (+)
- Subject + to be (was / were) + complement
- Subject + verb + object 2

Negative (-)
- Subject + to be (was / were) + not + complement
- Subject + did not + verb 1 + object

Interrogative (?)
- Did + subject + verb 1 + object?

Examples of Simple Past tense:

He was a businessman in 1999 (+)
I bought these motorcycles in Surabaya (+)
 
- I bought this bike in Surabaya
   She did not visit me yesterday (-)
- He did not visit me yesterday
  My parents were not home this afternoon (-)
 
Did you play football yesterday? (?)
Did you wear pink T-shirt ? (?)

Simple Past Continuous Tense

This Tense is useful to reveal something actions / events that are happening in the past (the "specified time" or simultaneously with the occurrence of something "other events").
  Special features Simple Past Continuous Tense: Predicate of the sentence consists of Verb I (plus ing)

Formula:
  Subject + To Be (was / were) + Verb I (plus ing) + object + adverb + adverb of Place of Time
"Certain Time " that accompanies the event is happening is placed between the adverb of Place with an adverb of Time.
"Other events" that accompanies the event is going well
placed between the adverb of Place with an adverb of Time. "Other Events" in the sentence above should be made in the form of Simple Past Tense, because it describes another incident in the past.

 Positive Sentences:

She was studying English at 10 am yesterday
Dia sedang belajar bahasa Inggris jam 10 pagi kemarin

I was washing my car when you phoned me yesterday afternoon
Saya sedang mencuci mobil ketika kamu menelepon saya kemaren siang.

Negative Sentences:

On the negative sentence added "not" after To Be, as follows:

They were not writing a letter
Mereka sedang tidak menulis sebuah surat

Tania was not browsing the internet when her father came last night
Tania sedang tidak membuka internet ketoka ayahnya datang tadi malam.



Interrogative Sentences:

In the sentence Interrogative Sentences, "To Be" is placed before the subjects sentence, as follows:
 
Were we watching the movie ?
Apakah kami sedang menonton film ?

Was she reading a magazine when the phone rang ?
Apakah dia sedang membaca majalah ketika telepon berdering ?











  Answer the question above as follows:

     To answer yes:
   
       Yes, She was.
       Yes, I was
       Yes,we were

      To answer  no :

       No, They were not
       No, she was not

  Adverbs of time  that is usually used in this tense are:

- This morning - yesterday - last month
- This afternoon - yesterday morning - last year
- This evening - yesterday afternoon - last Sunday
- Last night - last time - last Monday
- Just now - last week - before, etc.
