Simple Past Tense
Simple Past Tense is used to express the events that have occurred at a particular time in the past. events can
be short or long. Means can also be several events happening
one after one. In
general, there are two important
facts to remember in english
tenses this:
- Irregular verbs (Irregular Verbs)
- Negative sentences and questions are not as positive sentence but retain the basic form of the verb
Simple Past Tense use :
1. Events in the past that have been completed (for example: I went to school)
2. The situation in the past (they lived a normal life until they won a lottery)
3. A series of actions in the past
Formula:
Positive (+)
- Subject + to be (was / were) + complement
- Subject + verb + object 2
Negative (-)
- Subject + to be (was / were) + not + complement
- Subject + did not + verb 1 + object
Interrogative (?)
- Did + subject + verb 1 + object?
Examples of Simple Past tense:
He was a businessman in 1999 (+)
I bought these motorcycles in Surabaya (+)
- I bought this bike in Surabaya
She did not visit me yesterday (-)
- He did not visit me yesterday
My parents were not home this afternoon (-)
Did you play football yesterday? (?)
Did you wear pink T-shirt ? (?)
Simple Past Continuous Tense
This Tense is useful to reveal something actions / events that are happening in the past (the "specified time" or simultaneously with the occurrence of something "other events").
Special features Simple Past Continuous Tense: Predicate of the sentence consists of Verb I (plus ing)
Formula:
Subject + To Be (was / were) + Verb I (plus ing) + object + adverb + adverb of Place of Time
